Christmas village street length

Estimate linear street length for a Christmas village row from building widths and gap spacing for Prince William County mantel and table displays.

Formula street_in = buildings × building_width + gaps × gap_width (gaps = buildings − 1 for a single row)

When to use

Use this when a single main street of village buildings must fit a mantel, shelf, or table runner.

This builds street length from building count × width + gaps.

Layout guides often leave about one building-width for main-street gaps; courtyards can be tighter.

Pieces along one street.

Average footprint width facing the street.

Street/courtyard spacing.

Margin to mantel ends or tree skirt.

Worked example

Example defaults — 5 × 4 in + 4 × 6 in = 20 + 24 = 44 in; +2×2 end = 48 in street run.

If the mantel is 60 in, you have ~12 in left for a tree or lamppost cluster.

Mix scales carefully — oversized pieces eat gap visually even if the math fits.

Second example: one input changed

From the defaults (Buildings in the row = 5; Typical building width (in) = 4; Gap between buildings (in) = 6; End clearance each side (in) = 2), the calculator shows:

Building + gap length: 44.0 in
With end clearances: 48.0 in (~4.00 ft)
Gaps in row: 4

Now raise Buildings in the row from 5 to 8 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:

Building + gap length: 74.0 in
With end clearances: 78.0 in (~6.50 ft)
Gaps in row: 7

Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.

Limits / assumptions

Units: inches.

Assumptions: single straight row; uniform widths; gaps between buildings only (ends separate).

Not a substitute: multi-block city grids or platform area for depth × width pads.

Keep cords and warm bulbs clear of paper snow and fabric skirts. Do not overload shelves beyond furniture ratings.

FAQ

Two parallel streets?

Run the tool twice and add depths separately on the platform tool.

Shelf already measured?

Compare this street length to christmas village shelf length.

Platform square feet?

Use christmas village platform area.

Irregular widths?

Average widths or sum unique widths manually, then add gaps.
