Garland mantel swag bow count
Estimate decorative bows for a mantel garland from swag dips or mantel length and bow spacing.
bows = max(dips × bows_per_dip, floor(mantel_ft × 12 ÷ spacing_in) + 1)
When to use
Use this when the garland length is already planned and you need bow quantity. Enter either swag-dip count or mantel length with spacing (the tool uses the larger of the two modes when both are filled).
Common looks: one bow per dip, or bows every 18–24 inches along the mantel face.
Indoor ribbon is fine for most mantels; keep bows clear of candles and fireplace heat.
Visible low points in the draped garland (0 to ignore dip mode).
Usually 1; use 2 for stacked double bows.
Usable face length; 0 to ignore spacing mode.
Used when mantel length > 0.
Worked example
Example defaults — Dips = 3 × 1 bow; Mantel = 6 ft at 24 in spacing → floor(72/24)+1 = 4.
Tool reports the larger planning figure: max(3, 4) = 4 bows, so spacing mode wins.
If you only want dip bows, set mantel length to 0.
Limits / assumptions
See also: Mantel garland swag drape (garland feet) and Porch railing bow count (rail sections).
Assumptions: bows are discrete accents, not continuous ribbon wraps.
Not a substitute: heat clearance above a working fireplace still follows common-sense standoff.
Keep fabric bows and dried greenery away from open flames and hot fireplace surrounds. Use heat-safe holders for nearby candles.
FAQ
Dips or spacing?
Dip mode matches draped swags; spacing mode matches an even ribbon of bows. The larger result is a safe buy-up.
End bows?
Spacing mode includes both ends via +1. Dip mode only counts dips × bows/dip.
Outdoor mantel?
Same math; switch to outdoor waterproof bows.
Ribbon yards?
Use wreath bow ribbon length for each bow’s ribbon; multiply by bow count.
