Halloween cobweb spray cans
Estimate aerosol cobweb-spray cans from surface area and label coverage for Prince William County porch webs and façade accents.
cans = ceil((area_ft² × coats × (1 + waste%)) ÷ coverage_per_can)
When to use
Use this for Halloween cobweb string spray or web-effect aerosols when the can lists approximate sq ft coverage.
Generic spray-paint coverage figures do not account for stretched cobweb décor; this page frames coats and waste for that use.
Webcaster gun sticks are a different system (lb coverage); do not mix those numbers into aerosol cans.
Corners, railing faces, or bush fronts you will dust.
From the product label; if unknown, test one can.
Thin coats look more web-like than one heavy blast.
Outdoor breeze wastes product.
Worked example
Example defaults — 40 ft² × 2 coats = 80; +25% → 100; ÷ 25 ft²/can → buy 4 cans.
Mist from 12–18 inches in short bursts; heavy blobs look like paint, not web.
Mask windows and dark siding you do not want speckled.
Second example: one input changed
From the defaults (Area to mist (ft²) = 40; Coverage per can (ft²) = 25; Light coats = 2; Overspray / wind waste % = 25), the calculator shows:
Effective area demand: 100 ft²
Cans to buy: 4
Now raise Area to mist (ft²) from 40 to 60 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:
Effective area demand: 150 ft²
Cans to buy: 6
Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.
Limits / assumptions
Units: ft² and percent.
Assumptions: label coverage is honest for a light mist; waste is user-estimated.
Not a substitute: Webcaster stick lb charts or stretch-web bag coverage.
Use outdoors or with ventilation. Keep spray off skin, pets, and HVAC intakes. Follow can flammability warnings near candles and foggers.
FAQ
No coverage on the label?
Buy one test can, measure what you covered, then re-run with that number.
Stretch cotton webs?
Use spider web coverage / corner count instead.
Fence full length?
Area ≈ length × mist height.
Indoor ceilings?
Lower waste %; still protect floors.
