Halloween witch hat tree count
Estimate how many witch hats to hang on a porch tree or stake tower from height and vertical spacing for Prince William County Halloween yards.
hats = floor(height_ft × 12 ÷ spacing_in) + 1
When to use
Use this for hat garlands on a bare branch tree, porch post cluster, or DIY PVC witch-hat tower.
Includes top and bottom stations (+1). Tighter spacing (8–12 in) reads as a dense spiral; wider (18–24 in) reads as floating accents.
Usable vertical span for hats.
Center-to-center vertical spacing.
Repeat the same hang on multiple props.
Wind losses and color matching.
Worked example
Example defaults — Height 7 ft; Spacing 14 in; Trees 1; Spare 2.
Compute: hats/tree = floor(7 × 12 ÷ 14) + 1 = floor(6) + 1 = 7; buy 9 with spare.
Offset hats around the trunk so they do not stack in one sightline from the street.
Second example: one input changed
From the defaults (Hang height (feet) = 7; Hat spacing (inches) = 14; Trees / towers = 1; Spare hats = 2), the calculator shows:
Hats per tree: 7
Total hats: 7
Buy with spares: 9
Now raise Hang height (feet) from 7 to 11 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:
Hats per tree: 10
Total hats: 10
Buy with spares: 12
Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.
Limits / assumptions
Units: height in feet, spacing in inches.
Assumptions: one vertical station column per tree; hats similar size; no branch-count modeling.
Not a substitute: branch strength checks for heavy velvet hats in rain.
Secure hats so wind cannot loft them into the street. Keep hanging cords above walkway head-clearance.
FAQ
Spiral around the trunk?
Use the same count; stagger azimuth as you hang.
Mixed hat sizes?
Space for the largest brim so rims do not collide.
Fence line of hats?
Treat fence length like height with horizontal spacing — or use yard stake flags.
