LED controller channel load
Compare total LED watts across controller channels to your power-supply rating and see whether the load fits with headroom.
load_W = channels × watts_per_channel · ok if load_W × (1 + headroom%/100) ≤ PSU_W
When to use
Use this page when you need a transparent led controller channel load estimate before you buy décor or hang lights in Prince William County. You will enter number of channels / outputs, watts per channel (full white), power supply rating (watts), and psu headroom target (%).
Compare total LED watts across controller channels to your power-supply rating and see whether the load fits with headroom. Read the formula and worked example so the number is arithmetic you can check — not a guess from last year.
Outdoor electrical work still needs GFCI protection and manufacturer max-connect limits; this calculator does not replace those rules.
Use strip or pixel datasheet watts for that run.
20% is a common continuous-planning cushion.
Worked example
Start with the calculator’s default entries: Number of channels / outputs = 4; Watts per channel (full white) = 60; Power supply rating (watts) = 300; PSU headroom target (%) = 20.
With those entries the calculator returns:
Total LED load: 240 W
With 20% headroom target: 288 W needed
PSU utilization (raw load): 80% of 300 W
PSU looks adequate for this planning load.
Formula used: load_W = channels × watts_per_channel · ok if load_W × (1 + headroom%/100) ≤ PSU_W
Recompute the first line by hand from the formula. If your arithmetic and the result differ by more than rounding, the usual cause is a unit mix-up (inches vs feet, percent vs decimal) rather than the formula.
What changes if you change one input? Raise Number of channels / outputs from 4 to 6 and leave everything else alone. The result becomes:
Total LED load: 360 W
With 20% headroom target: 432 W needed
PSU utilization (raw load): 120% of 300 W
Upsize the PSU or split runs / inject power.
Changing one measured value at a time like this shows which input drives the answer, so you know which value is worth measuring twice before you buy.
Limits / assumptions
This led controller channel load page models only the arithmetic in the formula box. Taste, HOA rules, and neighbor sightlines are still on you.
Recheck against the worked example after any browser or copy change. If your setup violates an assumption on the page, do not lean on the headline number alone.
Output is for estimating and shopping lists — not a legal determination and not a replacement for outdoor electrical safety.
Planning aid only — never route more current through a controller than its per-channel and total ratings allow. Inject power into strips when needed and fuse feeds.
FAQ
What counts as a channel?
A physical power/data output feeding one strip or pixel run. Multi-port controllers may share one PSU across several channels.
Why add headroom?
LEDs and PSUs run cooler and more reliably when the supply is not pegged at 100% for hours.
Controller amp limit vs PSU?
Both matter. This tool checks PSU watts; also stay under each channel’s amp rating and wire gauge.
Holiday pixel props?
Yard matrices and arches often need power injection even when the controller can drive the data.
