Porch column wrap length
Estimate light-strand or garland feet to spiral-wrap a porch column from circumference, wrap height, and pitch.
turns = height_ft ÷ pitch_ft · strand_ft = turns × circumference_ft (+ spare)
When to use
Use this page when you need a transparent porch column wrap length estimate before you buy décor or hang lights in Prince William County. You will enter column circumference (inches), wrap height (feet), vertical pitch between wraps (inches), and lead-in / spare (feet).
Estimate light-strand or garland feet to spiral-wrap a porch column from circumference, wrap height, and pitch. Read the formula and worked example so the number is arithmetic you can check — not a guess from last year.
If a product package publishes its own coverage chart, keep that chart in the loop — this tool is the independent check.
Wrap a string once; or π × diameter.
Tighter pitch (2–4 in) looks denser.
Worked example
Start with the calculator’s default entries: Column circumference (inches) = 36; Wrap height (feet) = 8; Vertical pitch between wraps (inches) = 4; Lead-in / spare (feet) = 3.
With those entries the calculator returns:
Wrap turns: 24.0
Strand / garland needed: 75.0 ft
Circumference used: 3.00 ft. Round up to packaged strand lengths.
Formula used: turns = height_ft ÷ pitch_ft · strand_ft = turns × circumference_ft (+ spare)
Recompute the first line by hand from the formula. If your arithmetic and the result differ by more than rounding, the usual cause is a unit mix-up (inches vs feet, percent vs decimal) rather than the formula.
What changes if you change one input? Raise Column circumference (inches) from 36 to 54 and leave everything else alone. The result becomes:
Strand / garland needed: 111.0 ft
Circumference used: 4.50 ft. Round up to packaged strand lengths.
Changing one measured value at a time like this shows which input drives the answer, so you know which value is worth measuring twice before you buy.
Limits / assumptions
Units: keep every length in one system (feet or inches end-to-end) and every electrical quantity in the units the labels name. Mixing without converting invents a wrong answer.
Where the formula fails: odd roof geometry, wind on inflatables, worn sockets, and conditions not listed on the page are outside the model. Zero or nonsense inputs should error — do not force a number.
Not a substitute: the porch column wrap length result is a planning aid for holiday decorating — not an install quote, structural opinion, or product warranty.
Use outdoor-rated lights and secure with column-safe clips. Keep wraps clear of handrails and door swing.
FAQ
Square columns?
Measure the perimeter of the four faces and use that as circumference.
Lights vs garland?
Same geometry — enter the material you are wrapping.
Multiple columns?
Multiply total feet by column count, then round up to whole strand packs.
Tree wraps?
Use the tree strand count tool for trunks/canopies; this page is for porch posts.
