Stake light run length
Plan a stake-light path: stake count from length and spacing, plus cord feet including a lead-in to the outlet.
stakes = floor(path_ft ÷ spacing_ft) + 1 · cord_ft ≈ path_ft + lead_ft (+ return if loop)
When to use
Use this page when you need a transparent stake light run length estimate before you buy décor or hang lights in Prince William County. You will enter path / run length (feet), stake spacing (feet), lead-in to outlet (feet), and spare stakes.
Plan a stake-light path: stake count from length and spacing, plus cord feet including a lead-in to the outlet. Read the formula and worked example so the number is arithmetic you can check — not a guess from last year.
Outdoor electrical work still needs GFCI protection and manufacturer max-connect limits; this calculator does not replace those rules.
Worked example
Start with the calculator’s default entries: Path / run length (feet) = 40; Stake spacing (feet) = 5; Lead-in to outlet (feet) = 15; Cord layout = One-way run (path + lead); Spare stakes = 2.
With those entries the calculator returns:
Stakes needed: 9
Buy quantity: 11 (includes 2 spare)
Est. cord / cable: 55.0 ft
One-way: path plus lead-in.
Formula used: stakes = floor(path_ft ÷ spacing_ft) + 1 · cord_ft ≈ path_ft + lead_ft (+ return if loop)
Recompute the first line by hand from the formula. If your arithmetic and the result differ by more than rounding, the usual cause is a unit mix-up (inches vs feet, percent vs decimal) rather than the formula.
What changes if you change one input? Raise Path / run length (feet) from 40 to 60 and leave everything else alone. The result becomes:
Stakes needed: 13
Buy quantity: 15 (includes 2 spare)
Est. cord / cable: 75.0 ft
Changing one measured value at a time like this shows which input drives the answer, so you know which value is worth measuring twice before you buy.
Limits / assumptions
Assumptions: inputs match the hints (measured eaves, nameplate watts, package strand length, and so on). Terms not named in the formula are not secretly included.
Limits: outdoor weather, GFCI trips, and real stock sizes vary. Prefer outdoor-rated cords and clips; ladder and roof work need their own safety practices.
Responsibility: confirm safety-critical electrical and height decisions with manuals and, when needed, a qualified professional. PWC Lights does not stamp displays.
FAQ
Vs pathway stake count?
Pathway stake count focuses on quantity. This page also estimates cord feet for the run.
Solar stakes?
Stake count still applies; cord feet can be 0 if there is no low-voltage cable.
Candy cane lane?
Same spacing idea — see candy cane lane spacing for festive stakes.
Curves?
Measure tape along the curve for path length.
