Timer astronomical offset

Estimate seasonal on-hours when an astronomical timer turns on at sunset ± offset and runs a fixed evening window each night.

Formula on_hours_season ≈ nights × (evening_window_hr) · evening start = sunset + offset_hr (offset may be negative)

When to use

This tool helps when you want a timer astronomical offset planning figure with the assumptions written down. You will enter nights in season, evening on-window (hours), and sunset offset (hours, negative = before sunset).

Astronomical timers track sunset; many allow ± minutes or hours. This tool does not look up real sunsets — you supply the nightly window you programmed.

Stop and ask a licensed electrician when loads, hardwired outlets, or roof work go beyond temporary plug-in holiday displays.

Thanksgiving–New Year is often ~40 nights; Halloween weekends fewer.

How long lights stay on after the sunset trigger.

−0.25 = 15 min before sunset; +0.5 = 30 min after.

Local winter sunset often ~17:00; for display only.

Worked example

Example inputs from the form defaults — Nights in season = 40; Evening on-window (hours) = 5; Sunset offset (hours) = -0.25; Typical sunset clock hour (optional note) = 17 — are plausible homeowner figures, not a survey of your house.

Compute with: on_hours_season ≈ nights × (evening_window_hr) · evening start = sunset + offset_hr (offset may be negative). Show intermediates before the final count or length.

When the calculator and scratch math disagree, fix units first; the timer astronomical offset model is only as good as consistent inputs.

Limits / assumptions

Units: keep every length in one system (feet or inches end-to-end) and every electrical quantity in the units the labels name. Mixing without converting invents a wrong answer.

Where the formula fails: odd geometry, wind on inflatables, worn sockets, and conditions not listed on the page are outside the model. Zero or nonsense inputs should error — do not force a number.

Not a substitute: the timer astronomical offset result is a planning aid for holiday decorating — not an install quote, structural opinion, or product warranty.

Does not query ephemeris data — sunset hour is informational.

Verify timer dusk settings after DST changes. Keep outdoor timers weatherproof and GFCI upstream.

FAQ

Why not auto sunset lookup?

Browsers do not reliably know your yard latitude; enter the window you actually programmed.

Negative offset?

Yes — many displays start 10–30 minutes before sunset so lights are already on at dusk.

Morning off at sunrise?

If you also run to sunrise, replace evening_window with dusk-to-dawn hours from your timer log.

Compare to fixed timer?

Use Timer on-hours per season when on/off times are fixed clock hours instead of dusk-relative.
