Wreath hanger door clearance

Check whether a over-the-door wreath hanger will clear your door-top gap versus hook thickness, with a storm-door note.

Formula pass if door_gap ≥ hook_thickness (+ optional margin) · flag storm-door sandwich

When to use

Use this page when you need a transparent wreath hanger door clearance estimate before you buy décor or hang lights in Prince William County. You will enter door top gap (inches), hanger hook thickness (inches), and clearance margin (inches).

Check whether a over-the-door wreath hanger will clear your door-top gap versus hook thickness, with a storm-door note. Read the formula and worked example so the number is arithmetic you can check — not a guess from last year.

If a product package publishes its own coverage chart, keep that chart in the loop — this tool is the independent check.

Measure between door top edge and frame stop with the door closed.

Flat steel hangers are often ~1/8 in (0.125); padded ones are thicker.

Worked example

Start with the calculator’s default entries: Door top gap (inches) = 0.25; Hanger hook thickness (inches) = 0.125; Clearance margin (inches) = 0.05; Storm / screen door in front? = No; Also show gap in mm = Inches + mm.

With those entries the calculator returns:

Pass — gap clears hanger (+ margin).
Gap 0.250 in vs need 0.175 in (hook 0.125 + margin 0.050)
Gap 6.3 mm · need ≥ 4.4 mm

Formula used: pass if door_gap ≥ hook_thickness (+ optional margin) · flag storm-door sandwich

Recompute the first line by hand from the formula. If your arithmetic and the result differ by more than rounding, the usual cause is a unit mix-up (inches vs feet, percent vs decimal) rather than the formula.

What changes if you change one input? Raise Door top gap (inches) from 0.25 to 0.38 and leave everything else alone. The result becomes:

Gap 0.380 in vs need 0.175 in (hook 0.125 + margin 0.050)
Gap 9.7 mm · need ≥ 4.4 mm

Changing one measured value at a time like this shows which input drives the answer, so you know which value is worth measuring twice before you buy.

Limits / assumptions

Assumptions: inputs match the hints (measured eaves, nameplate watts, package strand length, and so on). Terms not named in the formula are not secretly included.

Limits: outdoor weather, GFCI trips, and real stock sizes vary. Prefer outdoor-rated cords and clips; ladder and roof work need their own safety practices.

Responsibility: confirm safety-critical electrical and height decisions with manuals and, when needed, a qualified professional. PWC Lights does not stamp displays.

Do not force a thick hanger into a tight gap — you can bend the door or break the weatherstrip. Mind storm-door glass clearance.

FAQ

Metric hangers?

Convert mm ÷ 25.4 for inches, or compare gap_mm ≥ hook_mm + margin_mm the same way.

Paint / weatherstrip?

Subtract crushed weatherstrip thickness from the measured gap if the hanger will compress it.

Magnetic hangers?

They skip the top gap — use if over-door hooks fail clearance or scratch the finish.

Heavy wreaths?

Clearance can still fail if the hook bends; check the hanger’s weight rating separately.
