Halloween candy chute slope
Check whether a porch candy chute’s rise and run make a steep enough angle for fun-size candy to slide for Prince William County trick-or-treat handouts.
angle° = arctan(rise ÷ run) × 180/π; pass if angle ≥ target°
When to use
Use this when building a PVC or cardboard candy chute from porch to sidewalk and you need degrees — not a generic ramp-drop tool alone.
DIY guides often cite ~2 ft drop per 6 ft chute (~18°) or ~20° saw cuts; smooth wide pipe helps sticky wrappers.
Height difference from chute top to exit.
Plan-view length of the chute.
Often 18–20° for fun-size candy.
≥2–3 in recommended for fun-size bars.
Worked example
Example defaults — rise 2 ft over run 6 ft → angle = arctan(2/6) ≈ 18.4° (passes 18° target).
Slope distance ≈ √(2²+6²) ≈ 6.3 ft of pipe to buy before fittings.
Widen diameter if full-size bars or stuffed bags must pass.
Second example: one input changed
From the defaults (Vertical drop / rise (ft) = 2; Horizontal run (ft) = 6; Minimum target angle (°) = 18; Pipe inside diameter (in) = 3), the calculator shows:
Chute angle: 18.4° (grade 33.3%)
Pipe length (slope): 6.32 ft
Diameter note: 3.0 in ID
Pass: meets or exceeds target 18°.
Now raise Vertical drop / rise (ft) from 2 to 3 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:
Chute angle: 26.6° (grade 50.0%)
Pipe length (slope): 6.71 ft
Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.
Limits / assumptions
Units: feet, degrees, inches.
Assumptions: straight chute; negligible friction model; candy slides when angle ≥ target.
Not a substitute: structural railing attachment engineering or ADA walkway rules for the path beside the chute.
Secure the chute so it cannot swing into faces. Keep exits aimed at bags, not eyes. Do not block required egress.
FAQ
Candy stuck halfway?
Increase rise, shorten run, or use smoother wider pipe; avoid fabric liners.
Stairs already slope?
Measure actual rise/run of the rail you zip-tie to.
Bowl refill math?
Use a candy shopping calculator separately — this page is slope only.
Angle Drop generic tools?
Same atan math; this page frames Halloween chute diameter and pass/fail for candy.
