Porch lantern chain length

Size hanging-lantern chain from porch ceiling height, lantern body, and target bottom clearance for Prince William County entries.

Formula chain_in = ceiling_in − canopy_in − lantern_body_in − target_bottom_in

When to use

Use this for hanging porch lanterns or holiday lantern pendants so bottoms clear heads and door swings.

Walkway porches often target 84–96 in bottom height; shorter lanterns need longer chains on tall ceilings.

Finished porch ceiling to floor.

Ceiling canopy thickness before chain starts.

Fixture height excluding chain.

Bottom of lantern above floor (84 in common).

Worked example

Example defaults — 120 − 2 − 14 − 84 = 20 in of chain.

If the result is negative, the lantern hangs too low at that target — raise the target bottom or pick a shorter body.

Leave a few spare links so you can fine-tune after hanging.

Second example: one input changed

From the defaults (Ceiling height (inches) = 120; Canopy / mount drop (inches) = 2; Lantern body height (inches) = 14; Target bottom height (inches) = 84), the calculator shows:

Chain length: 20.0 in (~1.67 ft)
Bottom height at that chain: 84 in above floor

Now raise Ceiling height (inches) from 120 to 180 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:

Chain length: 80.0 in (~6.67 ft)

Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.

Limits / assumptions

Units: inches.

Assumptions: single straight chain; level floor; one lantern.

Not a substitute: structural junction-box ratings or wet-location electrical listings.

Keep bottoms above head height on walk paths. Use outdoor-rated chain and listed wet-location fixtures.

FAQ

Two lanterns on a beam?

Run the math per fixture; match chain lengths by eye.

Sloped porch ceiling?

Measure at the mount point, not the eave edge.

Path lantern stakes?

Use outdoor lantern path count instead.

Fuel nights?

Use outdoor candle lantern fuel nights for oil/candle burn time.
