Halloween hanging ghost clearance

Estimate mount height so a hanging Halloween ghost clears heads or seating from ghost length and target bottom clearance for Prince William County porches.

Formula mount_height = ghost_length + bottom_clearance; pass if mount_height ≤ ceiling_height − hardware

When to use

Use this for cheesecloth or lighted swinging ghosts over walks and porch furniture.

This sizes mount height from ghost length + clearance.

Keep bottoms ≥ ~84 in over walkways when possible; over seating, clear cushions by a generous margin so guests do not face-plant into gauze.

Hang-point to bottom tip, fully extended.

84 in (~7 ft) is a common head-clear target on walks.

Porch ceiling or tree limb height at the hook.

S-hook or swivel length below the mount surface.

Worked example

Example defaults — mount need = 60 + 84 = 144 in; ceiling usable = 108 − 2 = 106 in → short.

Fix: shorter ghost, lower clearance over a garden bed (not a walk), or a higher tree limb.

If mount need ≤ usable height, the layout passes.

Second example: one input changed

From the defaults (Ghost length (in) = 60; Bottom clearance above floor (in) = 84; Mount surface height (in) = 108; Hook/hardware drop (in) = 2), the calculator shows:

Required mount height: 144 in (~12.00 ft)
Usable at hook: 106 in
Bottom height if hung here: 46 in — short by 38 in

Now raise Ghost length (in) from 60 to 90 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:

Required mount height: 174 in (~14.50 ft)
Bottom height if hung here: 16 in — short by 68 in

Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.

Limits / assumptions

Units: inches.

Assumptions: ghost hangs straight down in still air; wind swing not modeled.

Not a substitute: rated hang-point load checks or tree limb health.

Use outdoor-rated hooks into solid structure. Keep swinging props out of stair flights and door arcs. Electrified ghosts need GFCI protection.

FAQ

Over a chair?

Drop clearance toward 30–36 in above the seat cushion, not 84 in floor clearance.

Multiple ghosts?

Run per ghost; stagger heights so they do not tangle.

Spider drops?

Use hanging spider drop count for quantity.

Lantern chains?

Use porch lantern chain length.
