LED icicle amp per set

Estimate amps for LED icicle light sets: sets × watts per set ÷ 120 V, then compare to the label’s max end-to-end connect rating or your circuit headroom.

Formula amps = sets × watts_per_set ÷ 120; compare to max_end_to_end_amps (from label)

When to use

This tool helps when you want an icicle-set amp figure with the assumptions written down. You will enter number of sets, watts per set, and optionally the max connect amps from the product label.

End-to-end connect limits on icicle labels are often stricter than the branch-circuit breaker rating — respect the smaller limit.

Stop and ask a licensed electrician when loads, hardwired outlets, or multi-circuit displays go beyond temporary plug-in holiday lights.

How many identical sets on this daisy-chain or circuit branch.

From the set label or packaging (LED icicles are often low wattage).

From the label; 0 to skip the comparison.

Typical 15 A branch; derate for shared loads. 0 to skip.

Worked example

Example defaults — 3 sets × 12 W ÷ 120 V = 0.30 A. If the label allows 2.4 A end-to-end, you are well under the set limit.

Compute with: amps = sets × watts_per_set ÷ 120; then compare to max_end_to_end_amps and optional circuit amps.

When the calculator and scratch math disagree, confirm watts (not amps) on the label and that all sets are the same model.

Limits / assumptions

Units: watts per set; amps for limits; assumes 120 V nominal. Mixing 240 V without converting invents a wrong answer.

Where the formula fails: mixed models on one chain, damaged cords, and shared outlets with other loads are outside the simple model.

Not a substitute: the LED icicle amp per set result is a planning aid — not an electrical inspection or product warranty.

Icicle end-to-end framing only — use the power strip derate or GFI headroom calculators for mixed-device strips.

Do not exceed the manufacturer’s maximum sets end-to-end. Use outdoor-rated GFCI-protected outlets outdoors. Stop if cords are warm, damaged, or overloaded.

FAQ

Watts or amps on the label?

Prefer watts × sets ÷ 120. If only amps per set are listed, amps_total = sets × amps_per_set.

Why is end-to-end lower than 15 A?

The set’s connectors and wire gauge limit daisy-chains long before the breaker trips.

Mixing brands?

Do not daisy-chain different brands/models unless the labels allow it — calculate each run separately.

Shared circuit?

Subtract other loads on the same breaker before comparing circuit capacity.
