Lighted gift box stack stability
Estimate a safe maximum tier count for stacked lighted gift boxes from base width, box height, and a stability ratio for Prince William County porch displays.
max_tiers = floor((base_width_in × ratio) ÷ box_height_in)
When to use
Use this before stacking pre-lit gift boxes taller than the product photo — porch wind and narrow bases tip towers.
A common planning ratio is max height ≈ 1.5× base width for freestanding stacks; drop toward 1.0–1.2× in open yards.
Widest bottom box footprint.
Per-tier height including lid lip.
1.5 sheltered porch; 1.0–1.2 windy yard.

Worked example
Example defaults — Base 18 in; Box height 12 in; Ratio 1.5; Desired 3.
Compute: max_h = 18 × 1.5 = 27 in; max_tiers = floor(27 ÷ 12) = 2 → desired 3 fails; cap at 2 or widen the base.
Stake or weight the bottom box when you push the ratio on exposed porches.
Second example: one input changed
From the defaults (Base box width (inches) = 18; Average box height (inches) = 12; Max height ÷ base width = 1.5; Desired tiers = 3), the calculator shows:
Max safe height: 27.0 in
Max tiers at ratio: 2
Desired stack height: 36.0 in (3 tiers)
Status: Short — reduce tiers, widen base, or lower ratio target
Now raise Base box width (inches) from 18 to 27 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:
Max safe height: 40.5 in
Max tiers at ratio: 3
Status: Pass — within planning ratio
Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.
Limits / assumptions
Units: inches and dimensionless ratio.
Assumptions: boxes centered; no ice load; ratio is a planning heuristic, not an engineering stamp.
Not a substitute: manufacturer stack limits or structural wind design.
Tip-overs injure kids and pets. Stake tall stacks, keep clear of walkways, and bring towers in for high-wind alerts.
