Outdoor nutcracker porch fit
Check whether a giant nutcracker figure fits a porch from depth, width, ceiling clearance, and walkway needs for Prince William County entries.
fit if depth≥fig_d+walk AND width≥fig_w+sides AND ceiling≥fig_h+head
When to use
Use this before buying a 5–8 ft nutcracker so the figure does not block the door swing or head-clearance under a porch roof.
Plan a walk strip (often ≥36 in) past the figure and a few inches off walls so paint and siding stay safe.
House wall to porch edge.
Clear width where the figure will stand.
Floor to lowest porch ceiling or eave.
Front-to-back footprint.
Shoulder / base width.
Hat tip included.
Path past the figure to the door.
Clearance from walls and rails.
Air above the hat under the ceiling.
Worked example
Example defaults — Porch 96×120×96 in; Figure 20×24×72; Walk 36; Side 6; Head 6.
Need depth ≥ 20+36 = 56; width ≥ 24+2×6 = 36; ceiling ≥ 72+6 = 78 → all pass on the defaults.
If depth fails, choose a shorter figure or place it beside the walk, not in the door path.
Limits / assumptions
Units: inches.
Assumptions: one figure; door swing checked separately; no ice-dam height change.
Not a substitute: structural porch load ratings or HOA size rules.
Anchor tall figures against wind. Keep electrical cords out of the walk strip and door swing.
FAQ
Pair of nutcrackers?
Run the width check with 2× figure width + gap + side buffers.
Open stoop, no ceiling?
Set ceiling very high or equal to figure height + head so only plan/width bind.
Indoor foyer?
Same clearances — watch chandelier height.
