Outdoor ornament hook eave count
Count eave hooks for hanging outdoor ornaments from eave run and hook spacing for Prince William County rooflines.
hooks = floor(eave_ft × 12 ÷ spacing_in) + 1 (+ spare%)
When to use
Use this for oversized outdoor ball ornaments, snowflakes, or hanging décor clipped under the eave — not for C9 bulb clips.
Add spare for corners and wind losses; stagger two heights if ornaments collide.
Fascia or gutter frontage for ornaments.
Center-to-center along the eave.
Second row if you stagger heights.
Corners, wind losses, color matching.
Worked example
Example defaults — 40 ft eave; 18 in spacing → floor(480÷18)+1 = 27 hooks.
With 10% spare: buy 30 hooks. One row under the gutter front.
Keep ornament diameter under spacing so neighbors do not collide in wind.
Second example: one input changed
From the defaults (Eave run (feet) = 40; Hook spacing (inches) = 18; Hook rows = 1; Spare % = 10), the calculator shows:
Hooks per row: 27
Total hooks: 27
Buy with spare: 30
Now raise Eave run (feet) from 40 to 60 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:
Hooks per row: 41
Total hooks: 41
Buy with spare: 46
Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.
Limits / assumptions
Units: feet and inches.
Assumptions: straight eave; one ornament per hook; similar ornament weight.
Not a substitute: structural load checks for heavy glass on weak gutters.
Use outdoor-rated hooks sized for ornament weight. Do not overload gutter seams on windy ridges.
FAQ
Mixed ornament sizes?
Space for the largest diameter; hang smaller ones in gaps.
Gable peaks?
Measure each rake separately and add hook counts.
Same as light clips?
No — light clips follow bulb spacing; ornament hooks are décor stations.
Porch beam instead of eave?
Same math on beam length.
