Roof peak strand count

Estimate strands for a roof peak or ridge line using horizontal peak length and an optional pitch factor for the sloped run.

Formula run_ft ≈ peak_horizontal_ft × pitch_factor · strands = ceil(run_ft ÷ effective_strand_ft)

When to use

Use this page when you need a transparent roof peak strand count estimate before you buy décor or hang lights in Prince William County. You will enter peak / ridge horizontal length (feet), strand length (feet), and overlap per connection (feet).

Estimate strands for a roof peak or ridge line using horizontal peak length and an optional pitch factor for the sloped run. Read the formula and worked example so the number is arithmetic you can check — not a guess from last year.

Outdoor electrical work still needs GFCI protection and manufacturer max-connect limits; this calculator does not replace those rules.

Pitch factor stretches horizontal feet into approximate sloped run length.

Worked example

Using the form defaults (Peak / ridge horizontal length (feet) = 30, Strand length (feet) = 25), walk the formula: run_ft ≈ peak_horizontal_ft × pitch_factor · strands = ceil(run_ft ÷ effective_strand_ft).

A typical ceil(quantity ÷ size) path lands near 2 before spare percent — confirm against the Calculate result with the same inputs.

If your hand math disagrees, check units (inches vs feet) first.

Limits / assumptions

Assumptions: inputs match the hints (measured eaves, nameplate watts, package strand length, and so on). Terms not named in the formula are not secretly included.

Limits: outdoor weather, GFCI trips, and real stock sizes vary. Prefer outdoor-rated cords and clips; ladder and roof work need their own safety practices.

Responsibility: confirm safety-critical electrical and height decisions with manuals and, when needed, a qualified professional. PWC Lights does not stamp displays.

FAQ

Horizontal vs sloped?

Measure the peak along the ground plan (or ridge map length), then apply a pitch factor so the wire follows the slope.

Both sides of a gable?

Enter one side at a time, or double the horizontal length if you light both roof planes the same way.

Safety?

Work from the ground with poles when possible; follow ladder and roof safety. This tool only estimates strand count.

Clips?

Pair with the roof clip count calculator for gutter/shingle clip quantities.
