Curtain light drop count
Count vertical curtain-light strands (drops) for a window, porch, or backdrop from width and drops-per-foot density.
drops = ceil(width_ft × drops_per_ft) · total_light_ft ≈ drops × drop_height_ft
When to use
Reach for the curtain light drop count calculator when a decorating decision depends on measurements you already have. You will enter opening / backdrop width (feet), drops per foot of width, drop height (feet), and spare drops to buy.
Count vertical curtain-light strands (drops) for a window, porch, or backdrop from width and drops-per-foot density. Compare the panel result to the worked example, then adjust for spare strands, wind, or oddly shaped eaves.
Do not treat the output as an electrical-code stamp, install quote, or substitute for ladder safety and outdoor-rated gear.
About 1.5–3 drops/ft is common; denser looks fuller.
Floor or sill clearance — measure the vertical hang.
Worked example
Start with the calculator’s default entries: Opening / backdrop width (feet) = 8; Drops per foot of width = 2; Drop height (feet) = 7; Spare drops to buy = 2.
With those entries the calculator returns:
Vertical drops needed: 16
Approx. light length: 112 ft (drops × height)
Order with spares: 18 drops worth of curtain coverage
Compare to package drop counts (e.g. 200-drop curtains) and buy whole sets.
Formula used: drops = ceil(width_ft × drops_per_ft) · total_light_ft ≈ drops × drop_height_ft
Recompute the first line by hand from the formula. If your arithmetic and the result differ by more than rounding, the usual cause is a unit mix-up (inches vs feet, percent vs decimal) rather than the formula.
What changes if you change one input? Raise Opening / backdrop width (feet) from 8 to 12 and leave everything else alone. The result becomes:
Vertical drops needed: 24
Approx. light length: 168 ft (drops × height)
Order with spares: 26 drops worth of curtain coverage
Changing one measured value at a time like this shows which input drives the answer, so you know which value is worth measuring twice before you buy.
Limits / assumptions
Units: keep every length in one system (feet or inches end-to-end) and every electrical quantity in the units the labels name. Mixing without converting invents a wrong answer.
Where the formula fails: odd roof geometry, wind on inflatables, worn sockets, and conditions not listed on the page are outside the model. Zero or nonsense inputs should error — do not force a number.
Not a substitute: the curtain light drop count result is a planning aid for holiday decorating — not an install quote, structural opinion, or product warranty.
Use outdoor-rated curtains outside and keep cords clear of doors. Estimates assume even spacing across the rod or track.
FAQ
What is a drop?
One vertical strand hanging from the top bar — curtain lights are sold as many drops on one header.
Header length?
Match or slightly exceed the opening width so end drops are not stretched sideways.
Indoor windows?
Same math; watch heat near curtains and use clips that will not damage trim.
Related nets?
Bush nets cover shrubs; curtain drops are for flat vertical faces.
