Mantel candle cluster count
Estimate how many candle clusters (and total candles) fit a fireplace mantel from usable mantel length and cluster spacing for Prince William County holiday mantels.
clusters = floor((mantel_in − 2×end_buffer_in) ÷ spacing_in) + 1; candles = clusters × per_cluster
When to use
Use this for pillar or taper clusters spaced along a mantel shelf — not window candles.
End buffers keep clusters off the mantel edges and away from stockings or swags.
Odd cluster counts (3 or 5) often read better; the formula still works for any whole count.
Usable shelf length left to right.
Clearance from each end of the shelf.
Center-to-center between clusters.
Typical cluster is 3 staggered heights.
Worked example
Example defaults — Mantel 60; Buffer 4 each side; Spacing 14; Per cluster 3.
Usable = 60 − 8 = 52; clusters = floor(52 ÷ 14) + 1 = 3 + 1 = 4; candles = 12.
If you prefer an odd look, drop to 3 clusters and widen spacing visually.
Second example: one input changed
From the defaults (Mantel length (inches) = 60; End buffer each side (inches) = 4; Cluster spacing (inches) = 14; Candles per cluster = 3), the calculator shows:
Usable mantel: 52.0 in
Clusters: 4
Total candles: 12
Now raise Mantel length (inches) from 60 to 90 and keep the other entries. The result becomes:
Usable mantel: 82.0 in
Clusters: 6
Total candles: 18
Comparing the two runs tells you how sensitive the answer is to that one measurement. If a small change in it swings the result a lot, measure it twice.
Limits / assumptions
Units: inches; whole-number candles.
Assumptions: straight shelf; clusters do not overlap stockings or garland drops.

Fire safety: prefer LED; never leave open flames unattended.
Prefer LED candles near garland and stockings. If using real flame, keep clearances required by the candle maker and never leave them unattended.
FAQ
Stocking conflicts?
Place clusters between stockings or use Mantel stocking spacing first, then fit candles in the gaps.
One long candle row?
Set candles per cluster to 1 and treat each position as a single candle.
Deep mantel?
This tool is length-only; stagger depths by eye.
Garland on the mantel?
Reserve buffer for swag drops; tighten usable length if garland occupies shelf space.
